Grove Gallery wraps up ‘Portraits with Impact,’ hoping to focus on community, diversity

“Docken said she was inspired by Ressa’s book, “How to Stand Up to a Dictator,” as well as Ressa’s courage and resilience in exposing the spread of disinformation. Cuts can be seen on Docken’s portrait of Ressa, which she said was inspired by Ressa’s writing, as Ressa uses the phrase “a thousand cuts” to symbolize small cuts that break “the foundations of democracy.”

“I chose some of the passages that I found really powerful and I also transferred them there on the painting,” Docken said. “This is the first time I’ve done that. I’m usually pretty purist about watercolor. But this is my first venture into doing something more. Doing something different. And I think it worked out.”

Filipino lumpia are a spring roll-like snack of sweet or savory fillings wrapped in a thin pastry skin. Though delectable, the reduction of Asian cultures to little more than their food culture by a White majority in the United States is an ongoing problem. In time for Filipino American History Month in October, four Chicago art organizations come together to present Unwrapping Lumpia at Catacombs Gallery, which features the work of 38 artists who explore their heritage.
